Farmers Face Uncertainty After Council of State Ruling

Farmers looking to cease operations may be impacted by the recent ruling from the Council of State regarding nitrogen emissions. In December, the Council of State determined that farmers, businesses, and builders intending to start new activities must apply for a new nitrogen permit.

According to sources in The Hague, the cabinet fears that this may jeopardize the exit scheme for farmers. Nearly 1,700 farmers have expressed interest in shutting down their operations under this scheme, which targets major nitrogen emitters and is considered an effective solution to the nitrogen issue.
