The family of Melanie Vrancken, a mental health facility worker in Heerlen who was fatally stabbed in April this year, holds her employer liable for her death. A 29-year-old woman was arrested shortly after the incident; she lived independently on the grounds of the Mondriaan mental health facility despite expert advice against it.
The family’s attorney, Nino Pennino, claims that Mondriaan failed to act on warnings and intends to pursue a civil case for more information. The suspect, placed in a Skaeve Huse housing unit against expert recommendations due to her mental health issues, has a history of violence and judicial encounters.
Recent court proceedings have involved an assessment of her mental state at the Pieter Baan Center. The incident has caused distress among staff, leading to sick leaves and calls for increased safety measures.
The case against Miriam K. is scheduled for April 7 next year.
