Minister Faber of Asylum Affairs believes it is too early to draw conclusions about the border checks that began ten days ago. The checks have faced criticism from organizations involved in their implementation, including the Dutch Police Union (NPB), the Military Police Association, and the European Union Police Union (Eu.Pol), who argue the checks are ineffective.
Faber initiated the checks to prevent illegal immigration, but the unions claim this is only partially achievable due to a lack of personnel. They also argue that these checks are less effective than regular ones and negatively impact successful operations.
Faber disagrees, stating in a parliamentary debate that it is premature to share initial results in January, suggesting March as a more feasible timeline. Koen Simmers, a police project leader, mentioned that the intensified checks would only work with significantly more resources.
Faber disputes that the checks affect other military police duties, emphasizing their efficiency. JA-21 MP Eerdmans criticized Faber’s responses as unconvincing and noted Faber would have celebrated if numerous migrants were already stopped.
