Explosions in Rotterdam Linked to City Official’s Home

In a house in Rotterdam North, where five explosions have occurred in recent months, a municipal official resides, according to a letter from Mayor Schouten to the city council. The official works in the Safety Directorate.

Schouten assured that the risks related to potential criminal connections involving a municipal employee are being carefully considered. The municipality is also evaluating the impact on the employee’s work and has implemented “appropriate measures” where necessary, while considering the events’ impact on the staff member.

The Public Prosecution Service and police are conducting an investigation to identify the perpetrators and halt the violence. Since August, five explosions have occurred at the Meidoornstraat residence, with three happening in the last two weeks; an explosion also occurred at a neighbor’s house in October 2022.

After a November explosion, the house was closed for a month, and it has been shut again since January 2 for another month. The mayor will decide whether the closure will be extended.

Security has increased in the Meidoornstraat and surrounding area, with cameras installed and concrete blocks placed in parking spaces. Sandbags are positioned to minimize damage to neighboring properties in case of further incidents.

The mayor described the explosions as “terrible for the people of this street and the immediate vicinity.”
