Explosion and Shooting in Rotterdam Cause Damage

Four apartment units were severely damaged by an explosion in Rotterdam last night. Debris fell onto the street, and the blast blew out front doors.

The police evacuated the building’s residents. Earlier that night, gunfire was reported on the same street, according to local broadcaster Rijnmond.

No injuries occurred in either incident. The explosion happened around 4:00 AM, while the shots were fired a few hours earlier at about 1:00 AM.

The police found several bullet casings and arrested a suspect for the shooting, who has since been released. It is unclear if he remains a suspect.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the two incidents are unrelated. Immediately after the explosion, the police evacuated fifteen residents using a special bus from the Rotterdam transport company RET.

It is expected that the residents can return home later today. The street in Rotterdam-West has experienced frequent violent incidents in recent years.

A Polish store was shot at twice in the spring of 2021, and there were two explosions in June and September 2023.
