Explosion and fire damage homes in Purmerend

A house fire in Purmerend, suspected to have started after an explosion on the ground floor, spread to the attic and two adjacent homes. The cause of the explosion is unknown, but police consider possible foul play, ruling out a gas leak since most homes lack gas connections.

One person was seriously injured, and six others were treated for smoke inhalation. Surrounding homes sustained fire, smoke, and water damage, with five families requiring temporary accommodation.

Mayor Ellen van Selm visited the site, noting the significant impact on residents. Additionally, the fire damaged the district heating supply, affecting 75 to 100 homes.

Some residents expressed concerns over safety and criminal activity in the area.
