European Ministers Visit Syria After Regime Change

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has traveled to Syria with her French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot. This marks the first visit by European ministers to Syria since the fall of the Assad regime in early December.

Baerbock expressed on X that a new political beginning between Europe and Syria, and between Germany and Syria, is possible. Baerbock and Barrot are representing the European Union during their visit.

Baerbock stated, “With clear expectations of the new rulers, we travel to Damascus today. A new beginning is only possible if all Syrians, regardless of their ethnic or religious background, have a place in the political process.” Since the overthrow of the Assad regime, the Syrian movement HTS has been in power.

Baerbock and Barrot will conduct discussions with HTS leaders on behalf of EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.
