EU investigates TikTok for election interference in Romania

The European Commission has initiated an investigation into TikTok to assess whether the Chinese social media platform adequately prevented foreign influence during last month’s presidential elections in Romania. The first round was unexpectedly won by the pro-Russian candidate Calin Georgescu, and security services suggested that his videos were artificially promoted through manipulation.

The EU is questioning TikTok’s algorithm and its handling of political messages. The EU can fine social media companies that fail to act swiftly and effectively against illegal practices like election manipulation.

European Commission President Von der Leyen emphasized the need for rapid and decisive action when interference is suspected, especially during elections. A TikTok spokesperson told the German news agency DPA that the platform does not accept payments for political messages and removes content that violates guidelines on misinformation, harassment, and hate speech.

Romania’s constitutional court has invalidated the first round’s results, and a new date is yet to be set. Meanwhile, Romanian prosecutors are investigating Georgescu’s campaign.
