Estonia deploys navy to protect undersea power cable

Estonia has deployed its navy to safeguard an undersea electricity cable connecting Estonia and Finland. This measure aims to “defend and secure the energy link with Finland,” according to Tsahkna, Estonia’s Foreign Minister.

Last Wednesday, another power cable in the Baltic Sea was damaged, along with several internet cables. Finnish authorities are investigating the incident and suspect Russia of causing the damage.

Finland’s Prime Minister, Orpo, stated this morning that the incident was “clearly sabotage.” “If the undersea infrastructure is threatened again, Estonia will respond,” Minister Tsahkna noted, describing the incidents as “attacks on our essential infrastructures.” NATO is also planning to increase its military presence in the Baltic Sea, according to Secretary-General Mark Rutte on X. Rutte mentioned speaking with President Stubb of Finland about the ongoing investigation into the damaged cable, expressing “solidarity and support.” Last month, two other data cables in the Baltic Sea were damaged, one between Finland and Germany and another between Sweden and Lithuania. The cause remains unclear, but the primary suspect is the Chinese bulk carrier Yi Peng 3.
