Electric cars pose fire risks in parking garages

The fire safety of parking garages is at risk unless they are better equipped for electric vehicles, according to the Dutch Institute for Public Safety (NIPV). Fires involving electric cars are difficult to extinguish, and if such an incident occurs in a parking garage, it poses additional danger due to limited fire brigade access, the release of harmful substances, and potential damage to the garage’s structure.

Some fire departments, like at TU Delft, are restricting electric cars from parking garages, requiring them to park outdoors for easier emergency access.
