Elderly Woman Ordered to Vacate Nazi-Seized Home

In Wandlitz, East Germany, a judge has ruled that an 84-year-old woman must vacate her home, as it was forcibly taken by the Nazis from Jewish owners in 1939. The woman and her son appealed the decision to give up the house, but their appeal was dismissed.

The property will now be owned by the Jewish Claims Conference, an association of 23 Jewish organizations. Originally purchased in 1932, the house served as a vacation home for Jewish children.

The Lieske family has lived there for generations, receiving a notice in 2015 that it should be returned to the Jewish Claims Conference. The 84-year-old woman and her 61-year-old son currently reside there, stating they have no place to go.

The Jewish Claims Conference offered them the right to live in the house for life, which they declined.
