A 91-year-old man who fatally stabbed his wife in Amsterdam-West in January will not serve prison time. He is to be involuntarily committed due to mental health issues.
On January 19, the man stabbed his 84-year-old wife multiple times while she was seated in their living room, and then set a fire. She died a few days later.
Experts had previously determined that the man suffers from early-stage dementia and a delusional disorder. Although the court confirmed that he did kill his wife, he was acquitted of all charges.
The prosecution agreed, stating that imprisonment was not appropriate as the act was unintended. The man will be admitted to a secure facility starting today, according to AT5.
