Education Inspectorate finds mismanagement at ArtEZ

The Dutch Education Inspectorate has identified mismanagement at ArtEZ’s art programs. The investigation highlighted “socially unsafe situations” and, according to some involved, a culture of fear.

The issues must be resolved within a year, the inspectorate states. The investigation covered the architecture, visual arts, dance, design, and music academies in Arnhem, Zwolle, and Enschede’s AKI (Academy of Art and Industry), with significant issues reported at the AKI.

The report notes a “pattern” rather than isolated incidents, citing deficiencies in leadership’s ability to ensure a socially safe environment and open communication. The Supervisory Board was also criticized for insufficient action to ensure compliance with laws and codes.

ArtEZ has responded positively to the recommendations, with interim chairman Jan van der Boon stating existing improvements will be accelerated and expanded. Education Minister Bruins expressed concern in a letter to Parliament, emphasizing the importance of social safety in higher education.
