Former Dutch coffeeshop owner Johan van Laarhoven is suing the Dutch government, claiming wrongful imprisonment for over five years in Thailand. In an interview with NRC, Van Laarhoven described the harsh conditions he endured.
His lawyer confirmed to NOS that a civil lawsuit has been initiated. Van Laarhoven was arrested by Thai authorities in 2014 at the request of the Netherlands, suspected of money laundering, tax evasion, and being part of a criminal organization between 2002 and 2014.
A plea deal was made with the Dutch Public Prosecution Service involving fines and community service, with €7.75 million returned to the state. Van Laarhoven seeks compensation and to clear his name, expressing the trauma of his experience.
His lawyer mentioned that a summons has been prepared, with the case expected to progress early next year.
