Dutch woman arrested for incitement related to Syria video

A 26-year-old woman from Wijk en Aalburg, Netherlands, has been arrested on suspicion of incitement to commit a crime, according to the police. This follows the release of a social media video in which a young woman allegedly called for the extermination of Alawites in Syria.

The woman is currently in custody for questioning and will be presented to the examining magistrate tomorrow. The police have not disclosed further details about the investigation, as stated by a spokesperson to Omroep Brabant.

Alawites are a religious minority in Syria, to which exiled dictator Bashar al-Assad belongs. According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a massive outbreak of violence occurred last weekend in the western part of the country, resulting in over a thousand deaths.

Alawites were reportedly among the victims, although human rights groups indicate that they too have been involved in killings. Thousands have fled the violence, with many seeking refuge in Lebanon.
