Dutch Teen Sentenced for Throwing Fireworks at Police

The court in The Hague sentenced 19-year-old Bourak M. to six months in prison for throwing fireworks at two police officers on New Year’s Eve. The firework, a nitrate, exploded a few meters away from the officers, who were uninjured but shocked.

Omroep West cites an officer saying, “It’s another scar on your soul.” The incident caused stress for the officers and their families. M. fled the scene but was soon arrested.

He admitted to being under the influence of alcohol and throwing the firework, but denied aiming at the officers. He also claimed ignorance of its illegality, but the judge dismissed this, stating M. knew its potential danger.

The sentence matched the prosecution’s demand.
