A report by the Maatschappelijk Overleg Betalingsverkeer reveals that a growing number of Dutch adults require assistance with managing their banking affairs, particularly with online banking. The study, involving banks, De Nederlandsche Bank, and consumer representatives, indicates a decline in financial independence over the past four years.
Despite initiatives by banks, such as online lessons and workshops, improvements have not been evident. The Dutch Banking Association (NVB) attributes this to the recent implementation of their program, with expected results in 2024.
Challenges are significant among the elderly, with nearly 3.7 million people over 65 needing support. Difficulties include opening accounts, activating cards, and transferring money.
Vulnerable groups include those without internet access, visually or hearing impaired individuals, and those with limited digital skills. Additionally, 25% of adults struggle to contact banks independently, which is further compounded by fraudulent activities targeting these weaknesses.
