Dutch startups leave Europe for better opportunities

In recent years, Dutch startups have increasingly moved abroad, seeking better funding and fewer regulations. This trend raises concerns about Europe, including the Netherlands, lagging in innovation and technology.

Mario Draghi has highlighted the importance of startups for Europe’s long-term economic competitiveness. From 2008 to 2021, 40 of 147 successful European startups relocated, mainly to the US.

Former Dutch Minister Adriaansens examined the declining entrepreneurial climate in the Netherlands, which now ranks 9th globally, down from 5th. Co-founder Sohrab Hosseini of AI company Orc.ai plans to move to the US, citing better funding opportunities.

In 2022, US startups secured €269 billion in investments, compared to €2.5 billion in the Netherlands. Anke Huiskes, managing an investment fund, noted that US investors focus more on opportunities than risks.

Regulatory differences and incentives from countries like the UAE further entice startups. While challenges exist, Huiskes points out that the Netherlands still offers opportunities for businesses, with its technical talent, location, and educational institutions.

To remain competitive, Europe must become more attractive to investors, especially against giants like the US and China, as Draghi suggests.
