The Dutch House of Representatives will discontinue hearings for candidate ministers and state secretaries after the PVV withdrew its support, dissolving the majority backing. PVV representative Markuszower cited constitutional concerns and questioned the quality of the inquiry process.
The SGP, with VVD and SP, proposed a motion to abolish the hearings, arguing they do not align with the constitutional system, which does not involve Parliament in ministerial appointments. With PVV’s new stance, opponents now hold a majority of 77 out of 150 seats.
If no unforeseen events occur, the hearings will be voted out on Tuesday. D66’s Sneller, who initiated the hearings, expressed disappointment, advocating for transparency and the opportunity for candidates to address any issues before being sworn in.
Markuszower acknowledged Sneller’s point, noting that PVV candidates faced numerous non-policy-related questions, which he felt were politically motivated.
