Dutch Parliament Backs Limited Schiphol Noise Reduction

A majority in the Dutch House of Representatives supports the government’s plan to limit Schiphol Airport’s noise reduction to 15% instead of 17%. Initially, Parliament wanted more substantial measures.

Residents near the airport are disappointed by the lack of more extensive actions to mitigate noise. Last year, Parliament passed a motion urging a 17% reduction, which has now been largely abandoned by coalition parties.

Infrastructure Minister Madlener stated that the government aims for a 20% reduction eventually, but rapid downsizing is not feasible. This drew criticism from opposition parties, while Madlener cited potential economic impacts and international trade concerns.

Residents expressed disappointment, feeling their interests are overshadowed by the aviation industry’s priorities.
