A Dutch citizen has been sentenced in Belgium to five years in prison and fined 2,000 euros for involvement in three attacks in Antwerp. The 20-year-old Ichairo D. from Almere carried out the attacks on a nightclub and an office building.
He attacked the nightclub twice, on September 21 and 25, 2023, and targeted an insurance office on October 30, 2023. Explosives were used in all incidents, but no injuries were reported.
Surveillance footage from September 25 shows someone attaching a package with a 10-meter wire to the nightclub facade, which was detonated remotely, according to Belgian media. At the insurance office, a gasoline can and possibly Cobra-6 fireworks were ignited, and a message was left on the building’s facade.
Belgian authorities traced Ichairo D. after a car with a Dutch license plate was seen near each attack. The car was registered to him, and his phone was active in Antwerp during the attacks.
Snapchat messages on his phone included a September 25 inquiry if “it worked,” to which he replied affirmatively. A search of his home revealed a powder-filled tube and two fuses in his bedroom.
D. admits driving to Antwerp on the nights of the attacks but denies involvement, claiming he was only a driver for someone else and unaware of the attacks.
