Music by Dutch artists generated approximately €220 million globally last year, setting a new record, according to figures from Buma Cultuur. Dutch dance music continued to perform well, though the list of artists with the most international performances features many new names.
The net revenue represents an 11% increase compared to 2023. The previous record year was 2018, with €216.5 million earned.
The revenue includes music rights, recordings, and performances. The resurgence is attributed to a recovery following the COVID crisis, says Buma Cultuur director Frank Helmink.
Of the total revenue, about €54 million came from authors’ rights, while performances abroad contributed €158 million, or over 72%. New names dominate the top three performers abroad, with house and techno DJ Franky Rizardo leading with 112 international performances, followed by DJs Chris Stussy and Mau P. Helmink emphasizes that their success is self-made, without the support of established artists.
Non-electronic Dutch music is also popular internationally, with bands like Personal Trainer and Distant appearing frequently abroad. Helmink expresses optimism for the future of Dutch music.
Buma Cultuur releases these figures annually ahead of the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival. This year, the festival will focus on Italian pop.
