Dutch man killed in Nigeria kidnapping attempt

A Dutch man was killed on Monday evening in an attempted kidnapping in Nigeria, according to RTL Nieuws. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed to NOS that it is aware of the death of a 51-year-old Dutch resident in Nigeria.

The incident occurred when the man was in a van crossing a bridge over the Okulu River, which was attacked. The driver lost control while trying to flee from an armed gang, potentially intending to kidnap a passenger.

According to Nigerian media, the van fell into the river, and rescue workers later retrieved the Dutch man from the water. Other passengers managed to escape, as reported by the Daily Post.

The police chief of Rivers State visited the scene and described the attack as “barbaric,” stating that the police are investigating the attempted kidnapping and assuring that those responsible will be brought to justice. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated it is providing support to the bereaved family during this difficult time.
