The Dutch government has decided to limit the number of flights at Schiphol Airport to a maximum of 478,000 next year. This measure aims to reduce the number of residents experiencing severe noise disturbance by 15%.
While the original goal was a 20% reduction, additional measures will be implemented later to achieve this. The decision had to consider legal obligations, including the European Commission’s restrictions on rapid reductions and concerns from airlines like KLM about potential economic impacts.
Infrastructure and Water Management Minister Madlener acknowledged the significant impact on the aviation sector, noting that binding agreements will be made with airlines and the airport. Despite the current reduction, the minister hopes quieter aircraft will eventually allow for growth.
