Dutch government halts Syrian asylum decisions for six months

The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) will not make decisions on asylum applications from Syrians for the next six months. This decision was made by Minister Faber of Asylum and Migration due to recent events in Syria and the fall of President Assad’s regime.

Other European countries have also decided to suspend their assessments. The situation makes it difficult to determine whether Syria is safe for return.

The decision moratorium allows asylum applications to be paused until the implications of the power change in Syria are clearer, according to Faber’s letter to parliament. No one will be forced to return during this period, which aligns with the current policy since the country lacks diplomatic relations with the Assad regime.
