Dutch government approves gas extraction in Warffum

The Dutch government has granted permission for gas company NAM to continue gas extraction in Warffum, Groningen, until 2032. However, the request to start gas extraction under the Wadden Sea near Ternaard, Friesland, was denied due to environmental concerns and safety objections raised by the State Supervision of Mines (SodM).

The government emphasized the need for domestic gas to reduce dependency on foreign sources. Minister Hermans plans to explain the decision to local residents.

Despite opposition from some political parties and local communities due to safety and environmental concerns, the government maintains that gas extraction from small fields like Warffum is necessary until sustainable alternatives become more viable.
