Dutch farm receives first warning for inadequate wolf protection

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has issued a warning to a livestock farmer for the first time for failing to adequately protect sheep from wolves. The farmer experienced several wolf attacks, according to an NVWA press release.

A pack of wolves lives near the farm, prompting an inspection request that resulted in the warning. The authority stated that the farmer has since protected some of his sheep, aiming to encourage improvements for all sheep.

Farmers can apply for subsidies for wolf-proof fencing through BIJ12, the organization handling wolf matters for provinces. In September, it was revealed that half of the ten million euros available to help farmers deter wolves remained unused.
