Dutch Court Orders State to Reduce Nitrogen Emissions

There is joy at Greenpeace and disappointment among farming organizations following a court ruling in a nitrogen case filed by Greenpeace against the Dutch State. The ruling has triggered varied reactions, with all parties calling for political action.

This morning, The Hague Court ruled that the State must take immediate measures to reduce nitrogen emissions and prioritize the most vulnerable Natura 2000 areas. Greenpeace initiated the case to enforce concrete policies after what it described as the State’s “consistent neglect of the nitrogen issue.” The State faces a penalty of 10 million euros if nitrogen targets are not met by 2030.
