Ricardo Kaljouw from Oost-Souburg in the Netherlands has become the first Dutch person to climb the highest volcanic peak on each continent. Speaking from the southern tip of Chile, Kaljouw described himself as “the happiest man on earth.” After a decade-long dream, he successfully climbed Mount Sidley in Antarctica, the last on his list of seven highest volcanic peaks.
The expedition faced several obstacles, including a medical evacuation of a guide due to pulmonary edema and repeated weather-related setbacks. On their final attempt, the weather cleared, allowing the team to reach the summit.
Despite a harsh return journey where freezing conditions posed a risk, Kaljouw returned safely with only a frozen beard and mustache. He is the first person from the Benelux region and the fiftieth worldwide to complete this challenge.
His wife, a key supporter despite not sharing his passion, encouraged him to pursue these climbs. Kaljouw now plans to enjoy this achievement while considering future climbs of the world’s most remote volcanoes.
