Dutch cinemas see 10% drop in ticket sales in 2024

Dutch cinemas reported a 10% decline in ticket sales in 2024, with over 29 million tickets sold compared to 32 million in 2023, according to industry figures. However, these numbers are higher than during the COVID-19 pandemic when forced closures impacted the sector.

In 2022, visitor numbers rose to around 25 million. Pre-pandemic levels have not yet been reached, with 2019 seeing 38 million tickets sold, marking the best year since the 1960s.

Family films, such as Wonka, Inside Out 2, and Despicable Me 4, were particularly popular in 2024. Dutch films also attracted millions, with 5.1 million tickets sold, accounting for over one-sixth of all cinema tickets.

Loverboy: Emoties uit was the most watched Dutch film, followed by Bon Bini: Bangkok Nights and Verliefd op Bali. The industry continues to invest in new facilities and upgrades, adding features like lounge seats and enhanced cinematic effects.

Film director Martin Koolhoven suggests these enhancements help cinemas compete with home entertainment and streaming services. Art-house cinemas sold 3.5 million tickets, representing over 10% of all visits, with films like The Zone of Interest and Poor Things drawing large audiences.

Koolhoven attributes the rise in art-house cinema visits to the enhanced experience they offer, including dining options and themed events. He notes a growing love for cinema in the Netherlands, with more classic screenings and increased attendance compared to decades ago, expressing hope for this trend to continue.
