Dutch Foreign Minister Veldkamp held talks with his Romanian counterpart Hurezeanu regarding the art theft at the Drents Museum. Veldkamp emphasized that the Netherlands is making every effort to recover the stolen artifacts.
The discussion took place in Brussels during a European Union meeting. The theft, which involved pieces loaned from Romania’s National History Museum for an exhibition in Assen, was met with a strong reaction in Romania.
Despite criticism over the loan agreement, Veldkamp stated that there is no discord between the countries. He noted their cooperation in tracking down the perpetrators of the theft, which occurred overnight from Friday to Saturday.
Among the stolen items was the iconic golden helmet of Cotofenesti. The police released footage showing three individuals breaking in and there was an explosion.
Over a hundred tips have been received by the police. The Drents Museum expressed sorrow and showed solidarity with their Romanian colleagues.
The museum is currently closed to the public and cannot answer all inquiries due to the ongoing police investigation.
