Dutch agriculture can halve ammonia emissions in 5 years

Research conducted by Wageningen University, commissioned by the Interprovincial Consultation (IPO), indicates that ammonia emissions in agriculture can be reduced by nearly 50% over the next five years through feasible innovations and measures. The dairy sector shows the most potential for innovation.

A ruling by the Council of State in May 2019 stated that excessive nitrogen emissions were harming vulnerable nature areas. Consequently, farmers and companies cannot expand without a nitrogen permit.

While nitrogen itself is not harmful, certain nitrogen compounds can be. Innovations could also significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 27 to 48%.

Theoretical reductions in ammonia and methane could reach up to 72% compared to 2019 levels.
