Drag performer The Vivienne passes away at 32

James Lee Williams, known as drag queen The Vivienne, has died at the age of 32. The prominent drag artist won the first UK edition of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2019.

The cause of death has not been disclosed, but Cheshire police have indicated there are no suspicious circumstances. According to The Guardian, police were called yesterday afternoon to an address in Chorlton-by-Backford following reports of a sudden death.

A spokesperson for The Vivienne stated that no further details will be provided at this time. Born in Wales, Williams chose the drag name The Vivienne out of admiration for designer Vivienne Westwood’s clothing.

After competing in RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, The Vivienne became a well-known figure. She later participated in the international All Stars version of the show, gaining a global audience.

Known for her humor and celebrity impersonations, particularly of Donald Trump, she left a lasting impression. The show’s creators issued a statement saying, “We will miss her greatly, but her legacy will endure as a beacon of creativity and authenticity.

She embodied what it means to be a true champion.” The Vivienne also found success in other television programs, placing third on Dancing On Ice and playing the Wicked Witch of the West in a UK production of The Wizard Of Oz last year. Various RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants have responded to her passing.

Judge Michelle Visage expressed her devastation, and drag queen Cheryl, who competed in the same season, wrote on Instagram, “I will always love you Viv.”
