Denmark Gains European Support Against Trump’s Greenland Claim

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has received support from Germany, France, and NATO Secretary-General Rutte in her opposition to President Trump’s claim on Greenland. Trump wants Denmark to transfer Greenland to the United States and has not ruled out economic pressure or military force to achieve this.

German Chancellor Scholz, during a visit with Frederiksen, emphasized that borders should not be changed by force. Frederiksen later met with President Macron in Paris, expressing satisfaction with the unified stance that sovereign territories must be respected.

NATO chief Rutte, seen as a potential mediator, also met with Frederiksen. Although their discussions were not disclosed, a Reuters source indicated they agree on strengthening NATO’s Arctic defenses.

Earlier, Frederiksen secured support from Norway, Sweden, and Finland. In her previous term, Trump also expressed interest in Greenland, which Frederiksen then dismissed as “absurd.” However, to avoid offending Trump, she is acting more cautiously, given that the US is Denmark’s main export partner.

Greenland currently acts as a buffer between Russia and the US. Trump argues Denmark cannot adequately defend Greenland.

Consequently, Denmark announced a 2 billion euro investment to bolster its Greenland defenses, purchasing naval ships, drones, and satellites.
