DeepSeek challenges OpenAI with cost-effective AI chatbots

The Chinese company DeepSeek is drawing significant attention in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. Within a month, it has released two AI chatbots that rival the capabilities of American competitor OpenAI, but at a substantially lower cost.

This development has impacted stock markets, raising questions about the necessity of expensive chip technologies if similar outcomes can be achieved more affordably. DeepSeek, founded less than two years ago by Chinese engineer Liang Wenfeng, is aligned with China’s ambition to lead in AI by 2030.

The company employs top talent from prestigious universities in China.
