Death toll from Los Angeles wildfires rises to 24

The death toll from the devastating wildfires near Los Angeles has increased to 24, up from 16 last night. Local authorities anticipate more casualties.

Most fatalities occurred in the Eaton Fire near Altadena, north of Los Angeles, where 16 people lost their lives. Eight people died in Pacific Palisades, in the western part of the city.

Stronger winds are expected in the coming days, which could exacerbate the fires. Over 14,000 rescue workers are attempting to control the fires.

Assistance has been sent from nine U.S. states, and firefighters from neighboring countries Mexico and Canada have also arrived in Los Angeles.
