Starting next year, the daytime speed limit will be increased to 130 kilometers per hour on three highway sections, as announced by Minister Madlener (PVV) for Infrastructure and Water Management. The sections include the A6 between Lelystad-Noord and the Ketelbrug, most of the Afsluitdijk, and the A7 between Winschoten and the German border.
A study from the Ministry of Infrastructure shows no objections regarding nitrogen, noise, air quality, and traffic safety. In a letter to the House of Representatives, Madlener stated the aim to implement the new speed limit by the second quarter of 2025.
Currently, only a limited number of highway kilometers are affected. The minister plans to assess other highway sections for potential speed limit increases.
The new cabinet promised to raise speed limits where feasible, but it is acknowledged that it won’t be possible to return to pre-2020 levels everywhere due to high nitrogen emissions. Earlier in October, four sections were identified for potential speed limit increases, including the A37 between Holsloot and Zwartemeer, which is still under review with results expected in January.
