Data breach exposes VW electric car owners’ information

A significant data breach at Volkswagen has exposed the information of 800,000 electric car owners, according to an investigation by German magazine Der Spiegel. This breach affected data from approximately 61,000 vehicles registered in the Netherlands.

Detailed location data from nearly half a million vehicles were accessible, including cars belonging to politicians, businesspeople, 35 police electric vehicles, and even suspected intelligence service employees. Several terabytes of data from the 800,000 owners were largely unprotected and accessible for months in Amazon’s cloud storage.

This includes owners of Volkswagen brands such as ID.3 and ID.4 models, as well as Seat, Skoda, and Audi. Most of the data is from 2024, with some dating further back.
