Curacao Governor Highlights Lasting Impact of Kingdom Charter

During the 70th anniversary celebration of the Charter of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Governor Lucille George-Wout expressed pride in the significance of the document for Curaçao. Highlighting the transatlantic connection with the Netherlands, she noted the Kingdom’s support in areas like defense and diplomacy.

The governor emphasized that the Charter provides tangible protection for island citizens, allowing them to seek assistance at any Kingdom embassy worldwide. She described the 70 years since its inception as a brief period in historical terms and stressed the importance of continued development and understanding of the Charter.

George-Wout clarified that the Charter, which supersedes the Dutch constitution, guarantees autonomy within the Kingdom and should not be viewed as a colonial document. She likened the Charter to a lion standing on three legs, representing the separation of powers, and underscored the need to uphold its principles.

Agreeing with former Prime Minister Maria Liberia-Peters, she highlighted the Charter’s role in fostering social cohesion. George-Wout concluded by urging the population to recognize the Charter’s value in building a strong, autonomous future within the Kingdom.
