Approximately forty cows fell through the floor of their barn in Westbroek, Utrecht, earlier today. The animals are trapped in the slurry pit.
A spokesperson for the Utrecht Safety Region described the situation as “dramatic,” noting that some cows are barely keeping their noses above the manure, according to RTV Utrecht. Rescue efforts are underway, but it is unclear if all the animals can be saved.
Hay bales have been placed at the sides to help the cows climb out, and local cranes are being brought in for assistance. The rescue operation is expected to be lengthy.
The Utrecht Safety Region reported at 1:00 PM that no animals have been injured or killed. The cause of the floor collapse is still unknown.
