Controversial Dutch motion on migration data sparks debate

A motion by VVD Member of Parliament Bente Becker to collect data on the cultural and religious values of Dutch citizens with a migration background has sparked significant public debate. The motion, which passed with a large majority in the Dutch House of Representatives, has been criticized as racist by some, while others view it as a continuation of existing research practices.

Becker argues that the data can provide insights into the cultural integration of migrants. The motion has faced opposition from parties like GroenLinks-PvdA and D66, while parties such as SP supported it, seeing it as a scientific endeavor conducted by institutions like the Social and Cultural Planning Office (SCP).

Becker expressed surprise at the backlash and emphasized that the debate should focus on integration without accusations of racism. Meanwhile, SCP clarified that no request for research has been received from the Ministry of Social Affairs following the motion.

The controversy highlights broader societal concerns about integration and data collection practices.
