Over 250 individuals gathered this morning to bid farewell to three family members who died in an explosion at an apartment building on Tarwekamp in The Hague. “We are overwhelmed with deep sorrow and inconsolable because we miss Li, Renai, and Sofia,” said a family friend at the ceremony.
“We are also angry about the senseless injustice they faced.” The explosion, which occurred two weeks ago, claimed six lives, including the 44-year-old mother Li, the 45-year-old father Renai, and their 17-year-old daughter Sofia. The family had lived in the Netherlands for just over a decade, according to a statement released this afternoon.
The parents were described as “hardworking small business owners,” and their daughter, Sofia, was a diligent and ambitious child who “knew exactly what she wanted to become: a doctor, to save lives,” the statement read. An eight-year-old son was the sole survivor of the explosion.
“Three family members abruptly taken. An 8-year-old boy instantly orphaned,” the family said.
“We are heartbroken that three dear and innocent relatives were murdered in this indescribable way. It is simply incomprehensible,” they added.
“We cannot accept it, and the pain is immense.” Support wave: The family also acknowledged the support from the community. “We feel the empathy from so many people, and that provides comfort.” Mayor Van Zanen attended the ceremony as well.
“Li, Renai, and Sofia were taken from this world too soon, as were three other victims of the Tarwekamp disaster,” he stated. “Six precious and unique lives were lost.
I am still devastated.” “An overwhelming wave of assistance and solidarity has enveloped the affected families like a warm blanket,” the Hague mayor continued. “I sincerely hope that this solidarity gives your family the strength to move forward.” Fundraising: Asian Heritage, an organization advocating for Chinese Dutch citizens, raised nearly 100,000 euros in a fundraiser for the affected family.
The money will cover funeral expenses, hotels, and travel costs for family members who flew in from China. Asian Heritage also aims to support the 8-year-old son financially, who is now being cared for by his aunt, the sister of his deceased father.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the motive for the explosions might be related to a personal relationship issue. One of the four arrested suspects is the ex-boyfriend of the owner of the destroyed bridal shop, according to AD.
The newspaper suggested that 33-year-old Moshtag B. may have orchestrated the attack.
