The Cobra firework is increasingly popular among criminals and youths in the Netherlands, contributing to 80% of this year’s 1100 explosive incidents. Last year saw 21,000 firework-related incidents, mainly involving young people, with the Cobra playing a significant role.
The Cobra, a professional-use firework, contains flash powder and is banned for consumers. Its explosion can be as powerful as a military grenade, causing severe injuries.
Despite production being legal in some European regions, the Netherlands bans its import. Criminal networks reportedly distribute Cobras through social media and schools.
Though Dutch authorities can enforce existing laws, they advocate for a European ban. However, Minister Van Weel opposes a nationwide firework ban.
