Ceasefire Announced Between Hamas and Israel

A young Palestinian man expressed his relief as celebrations erupted on the streets after an agreement was reached to end the violence in Gaza. The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel is set to commence on Sunday, after fifteen months of conflict.

Gaza’s residents were anxiously awaiting confirmation of the ceasefire, with journalist Bisan Owda highlighting the anticipation and desperation of two million Palestinians. Even before the official announcement, people took to the streets in joy, as reported by Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmood.

The ceasefire aims to halt bombings that have devastated large parts of Gaza and improve the humanitarian situation by allowing the entry of 600 aid trucks daily. Yet, reports of Israeli airstrikes persisted, causing fatalities.

Many Palestinians plan to return home, though many homes are destroyed. The ceasefire comes too late for many; official Palestinian sources report over 46,000 deaths, mostly civilians, with a higher actual toll.

Despite relief, future rebuilding efforts will require time and resources, contingent on the ceasefire holding. Some, like Abed al-Attar from Almere, hope to leave Gaza soon, though the border with Egypt is still uncertain.
