Car Fires Surge During New Year’s Eve Celebrations

During the recent New Year’s Eve, there was a significant increase in car fires compared to previous years. A total of 270 cars caught fire, which is 40 more than the previous year and the highest number since 2019, according to fire department statistics.

The Rotterdam-Rijnmond area experienced the most incidents with 42 car fires. In the province of Utrecht, there were 38, and in the Haaglanden region, 30 car fires were reported.

Overall, the fire department responded over 4,000 times during the celebrations, slightly more than the previous year. Additionally, there were more house fires and container fires than in the previous year, with 144 house fires and 1,054 container fires reported, marking the highest numbers since 2019.

The Eye Hospital in Rotterdam has treated 27 firework-related eye injury patients so far. As of last evening, the hospital had reported treating 18 patients.

The number may still rise as more people could seek medical attention. The hospital has performed surgeries on eight individuals.
