Call for Youth Action Against Nuclear Weapons

Youth must advocate for a nuclear-free world, given the increased power of today’s nuclear weapons, stated Terumi Tanaka, a 92-year-old co-chair of the Japanese anti-nuclear organization Nihon Hidankyo. During the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, Tanaka addressed an audience of about 1,000, including the Norwegian royal family.

Nihon Hidankyo, comprising survivors of the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was awarded this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. Tanaka emphasized that anyone could become a victim or perpetrator at any moment, urging the younger generation to build on the efforts of the survivors, whose average age is now 85.

He criticized Russian President Putin for not recognizing the dangers of nuclear weapons, noting Putin’s recent adjustments to Russia’s nuclear doctrine. The Nobel Peace Prize recognition was a poignant moment for Japan.
