Opposition parties have criticized the Dutch cabinet for not taking immediate action following the latest RIVM report linking goat farms to pneumonia risks for nearby residents. The report indicates an increased risk of respiratory illnesses for those living within two kilometers of goat farms, with 20 to 100 estimated deaths annually.
Although the cabinet has sought additional advice from the Health Council, internal disagreements have arisen between Health Minister Agema (PVV), who advocates for measures, and Agriculture Minister Wiersma (BBB), who prefers to wait for more certainty. Some coalition members, like VVD’s Van Campen, agree with Wiersma, citing potential sector impacts.
Previous studies also indicated similar health risks. An upcoming parliamentary debate may pressure the cabinet to act faster.
