Burkina Faso junta dissolves government amid rising insecurity

Burkina Faso’s military regime has dismissed the interim prime minister and dissolved the government. Junta leader Ibrahim Traoré stated that officials from the dissolved government would continue their duties until a new government is formed.

No reason was given for this move. The junta seized power in 2022 by overthrowing the then military regime, which itself had taken control by deposing the democratically elected President Roch Marc Kaboré eight months earlier.

Kaboré faced unpopularity due to the poor security situation in the West African nation, which has long struggled with terrorism and insurgencies linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State. Traoré had pledged to tackle these groups firmly, but under his rule, the security situation has worsened, with analysts estimating that nearly half of Burkina Faso is controlled by insurgents.

Thousands of people have been killed and over 2 million displaced in recent years. Last October, Doctors Without Borders left the country due to frequent targeting by terrorist groups.
