Burgum warns of losing AI race to China without fossil fuels

Doug Burgum, nominated by Trump as Secretary of the Interior, informed the Senate that the U.S. will lose the “AI arms race with China” unless it increases fossil fuel energy production. Burgum, a wealthy former governor of North Dakota, is also a candidate to lead a national council focused on boosting domestic energy output.

He is considered a key figure in Trump’s energy policy, along with Energy Secretary nominee Chris Wright. President Biden recently signed an executive order to open land for AI infrastructure, contingent on clean energy sources.

Burgum criticized these restrictions, advocating for more land to be available for oil drilling and fewer tax benefits for renewable energy. He argues that wind and solar power are unreliable due to their intermittent nature and emphasizes the need for fossil fuel energy to address the U.S. energy crisis.

Burgum also suggests utilizing new technologies to reduce emissions without compromising clean air and water, though experts caution that these technologies are largely untested and expensive.
