British actor Brian Murphy, aged 92, has passed away. He was best known for his role as George Roper in the 1970s sitcoms “Man About the House” and its spin-off “George & Mildred.” In “Man About the House,” George and Mildred Roper, played by Yootha Joyce, were the older neighbors of the young main characters.
George was often depicted as being dominated by Mildred. The bickering couple became so popular that they received their own series.
In the first episode of “George & Mildred,” the Ropers moved from their London apartment to a house in the suburbs, much to the dismay of their new neighbor, who feared a decline in property value. “George & Mildred” ran for five seasons and also had a feature film dedicated to Joyce, who died suddenly in 1980 before the film’s release.
Murphy’s career began in the 1950s with stage performances, including various Shakespearean roles. Even after “George & Mildred,” he remained active in acting, appearing on stage, television, and in films.
He was married to actress Linda Regan, known in the Netherlands for “Hi-de-Hi!,” a comedy about happenings at a holiday camp.
